Vehicle Sound Insulation/Thermal Insulation for Mass Transportation

Polymer's insulation materials have been used for many years in the engine compartments, ceilings, walls, and flooring of buses and railcars for a variety of thermal and acoustical applications.

Over the last decade, many of our materials have been used to comply with the more stringent requirements of federal transit authority docket 90A, which calls for greater flame resistance, lower smoke generation, and lower toxicity emissions of materials used in these applications.

Polydamp® Insulation for Engine Compartments/Firewalls
Polymer produces a variety of products used for insulating engine compartments and firewalls.  These products include Polydamp® acoustical foams, Polydamp® acoustical foam barrier composites, and urethane or vinyl-based materials where motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS-302) are required.

Polydamp® for Rail and Bus Insulation Applications
For rail and bus insulation applications requiring docket 90 compliance materials, Polymer produces Polydamp® melamine foams and Polydamp® hydrophobic melamine foams.  These products are produced with and without Polydamp® acoustical barriers and facings.

These materials can be tuned to specific frequencies or temperature requirements within the area.  This focuses on retaining the noise, as well reducing any sort of transmission loss or noise penetrating into the passenger compartment or to passersby.

Extensional dampers with varying degrees of flame retardancy are also available should resonance within the structure be evident.

As with all noise control applications, gaskets should be used to seal any acoustical leaks, holes or gaps.

Insulation for Walls & Ceilings/HVAC

Polymer produces docket 90 compliant Polydamp® Melamine and Hydrophobic Melamine foams with and without film facings for acoustical and thermal control in walls and HVAC ducting.  Polydamp® Hydrophobic Melamine foam (PHM) is extremely water repellent versus the traditionally used standard Polydamp® Melamine foam.  This foam material also offers a degree of safety in the long term use in these applications.  The beauty of Polydamp® foams lies in their low weight and extreme efficiency when compared with fiberglass materials which have traditionally been used in railcars and buses.

Film facings include reinforced aluminum foil and other docket 90 compliant films for additional durability and thermal resistance.

Flooring Insulation Products
Polydamp® Acoustical Barriers can be used to reduce the transmission of noise from wheels and road noise in Polydamp® Extensional Damping Materials and constrained layer damping systems in both Docket 90A MVSS302.  Ranging from 1/2 pound to 2 pounds per square foot in both Docket 90A and MVSS302 grades, these materials can be used to reduce resonance in the floor structure and to further enhance the acoustical properties of that floor structure.  These products are typically lower in weight, where such is a concern.
